PLAYtime! – Hello Adam

We took the kids to watch Hello Adam today. Didn’t really know what the show was about but bought tickets long time ago based on the title of the production. We didn’t get very good seats because we made it in just as the show was starting. (Digression: I hate it when there’s a running event going on in the area when I’m at the Esplanade because the eating places are inevitably filled with the runners and we have to wait ages to get food!)

Hello Adam was all about movement! Using a range of props like balls of various sizes, blocks and slinkies, the performers moved around catching, throwing, jumping, running, etc. There wasn’t a storyline of any sort but the fast-paced performance was visually very entertaining for the kids.

Anya loved the bit where two performers were dancing around with ribbon sticks and I have pinky-promised that I will make one for her to twirl around with. Adam was under the weather and not as enthusiastic as usual but he sat through the entire performance without fussing and liked the bit where they lifted a big piece of cloth up and down like a parachute with the lights changing in colour. He was also happy to pick up the little coloured balls after the performance.

PLAYtime! – Hello Ling

I have so many posts waiting to make their way from my mind to this blog that I’ve decided to blog about our most recent activity first! We caught Hello Ling at the Esplanade this morning and it was Adam’s very first play. I think he did quite well. There was no whining or crying and he didn’t attempt to leave halfway. He was occasionally distracted by the Hello Ling sticker on his shirt and the Hello Ling mask but he enjoyed the performance! PLAYtime! is recommended for kids 2-4 so I think it was just a wee bit simple for Anya but she had fun too.

I liked how the three actors were energetic, enthusiastic and genuine throughout the performance which I feel is important when acting for young children. The kids learnt about different concepts of light such as what makes a rainbow, what makes shadows, how light is needed for plants to grow, etc. There were different elements to catch the children’s attention and whenever Adam got distracted, I would be able to get him interested in the performance again by pointing out one of the actors making his/ her way through the audience or something being projected on the big screen.

The next PLAYtime! performance is Hello Adam from 3-9 Nov and we’re definitely catching that just based on its title!

PLAYtime! – Oh, What a Noisy Zoo!

Anya and I went to watch Oh, What a Noisy Zoo! at the Esplanade on Wednesday. We definitely enjoyed this a lot more than the previous PLAYtime! production. Anya had a good time singing, dancing and doing the actions to the songs even though we were seated quite far back from the stage area because we’d gotten there just in time for the show. I liked how they used shadow puppets at the beginning to show the little girl cycling to the zoo especially since the recent Octoburst! included a shadow puppetry exhibition.

When the elephants came out, they sang the One Elephant Went Out to Play song and played a freezing game. The song and game were later used for the monkeys too. It would have been good if the monkey segment had a different song from the elephant one so that the more restless kids wouldn’t get bored. But Anya has been making me sing the song and play the freezing game since Wednesday so I guess the repetition made the song and game stick in her mind!

I wasn’t too pleased that the Delphin people had a booth there because I find them very aggressive in the way they sell their products and services and also because they were blocking the poster of the performance so we couldn’t take a photo in front of it like we usually do. The next PLAYtime performance is Hello Elly! Haven’t decided if we’re watching that yet. Will see if the cousins want to watch as well!

PLAYtime! Todd, the Big Green Frog

with Selena & Asher

picture from the PLAYtime! Facebook page

We went to watch Todd, the Big Green Frog last Saturday. It was quite enjoyable and there was nothing that Anya found scary unlike in the previous PLAYtime! performances. Selena and family were there too so the mummies and kids sat together in front while the daddies went to hide somewhere at the back. They gave each kid a lily pad made of felt which I thought was a great idea cos itchy fingers had something to fiddle with and I didn’t see anyone trying to destroy props this time round! I thought the story about a frog who was different and trying to fit in with the rest was appropriate and meaningful. Some parents may not have liked the ‘violent’ bits (frog throwing rocks at the crocodile and squashing the crocodile by sitting on him) but I thought those bits were ok too. The songs sung during the performance were familiar and catchy. On the whole, it was a good production so we’ll probably go for Rocky, the Baby Panda in July!

Huayi Festival: The Magic Ocean 奇幻海洋

Fifi, Anya and I went to watch 奇幻海洋 on Saturday at the Esplanade. This play was performed in English last June and had pretty good reviews (the photos below are from that June performance. The one we watched was in Chinese and had Chinese actors). But I really didn’t enjoy it at all and I think Anya didn’t like it as much as The Magic Treetop that we watched last month. Firstly, unlike The Magic Treetop, there wasn’t any sort of a main plot holding the play together. There were a few things going on: a turtle was trying to find a place to lay her eggs, a shark wanted to make friends with some fish and there was a crab clearing rubbish and looking for a new shell. But there was nothing resembling a decent storyline.

Secondly, many children in the audience were completely out of control!! There wasn’t a raised performance area so while there were certain parts during the play where interaction was allowed and encouraged, kids were running around the performance area even when they weren’t supposed to! And the parents did nothing! I saw some kids getting in the way of the actors and the ushers trying desperately to get them to sit down while the parents just looked on adoringly with this “Oh look how much energy and initiative my kid has!” expression on their faces! There was this kid who ran out and clung onto the leg of one of the actors! And some kid stepped all over Fifi’s bag while trying to touch some sea creature. The kids were really rough and were grabbing at things and destroying the props. There was a stingray made of wire and some filmy material and the kids totally bent it out of shape and tore the material! I could feel my blood pressure rising steadily. ;(

Anya liked the bit about the turtle trying to lay eggs (she really loves eggs lah) and the jellyfish but was scared of the whale. She didn’t have very much to say about the rest of the play. I really hope the next one we go to is better and has a proper performance area so kids don’t run amok!

PLAYtime! The Magic Treetop

We went to watch ‘The Magic Treetop’ at the Esplanade today. It was much better than the previous PLAYtime! performance ‘The Kingdom under the Bed’ which we watched last October. The play was about a squirrel who took a robin’s egg thinking that it was a big nut and how the robin tried to get her egg back. The performance area was Y-shaped which meant that more kids could get up close to the action. There was a lot more interaction with the audience than that previous play we watched. There were ‘fireflies’ that ‘flew’ over the audience and ‘clouds’ that ‘floated’ by. The kids in the audience were also involved in gathering acorns for the squirrel and pasting coloured dots on a chameleon. There were spelling bees which flew around spelling words and the moral of the story was about being kind to others and doing the right thing. I thought it was very interesting and I think Anya enjoyed most of it though she was a bit clingy cos she didn’t nap and was very tired. I hope ‘The Magic Ocean’ that we’re watching next month will be as good (even though it’s in Mandarin which Anya doesn’t really understand)!

Ok, I still need to complain a bit about some of the parents and kids there. The two girls beside Anya kept shushing her BEFORE the play started which was a bit ridiculous. One of the girls also ‘stole’ a coloured dot from another girl and I had to ask her to return it. Her mother was seated somewhere at the back. Also don’t understand why parents don’t ensure that their kids behave!! I saw a boy tearing off a bit of the cloud floating by and after the play, there were kids pulling bits of the set off and the parents just didn’t care!!

Children’s Day Weekend

The last time Anya met up with her cousins and the gang babies on the same day was back in March at her 1st birthday party. So it was really nice that she got to see almost all the babies yesterday! We met up with Jon, Selena & Asher and Terrence, Sharon & Aidan to watch ‘The Kingdom Under My Bed’ at the Esplanade. As usual, she liked the bits with the singing and dancing but claimed she was scared at certain talking bits which were too loud. Then in the late afternoon, we went over to Xin’s place to celebrate Reuel & Alex’s 2nd birthday! Such a fun day!
