MM 1000x600px V1(11May)-04

Mister Maker and the Shapes live on stage!

If there’s one programme that my three kids can agree on, it’s Mister Maker. They love watching him create art from anything and everything around him. We’re really excited that we will be able to catch Mister Maker live in his first ever theatre tour in Singapore! There are seven shows only from 10 to 12 June 2016.

During this interactive live show, there’s going to be a big ‘make’ to take part in, lots of opportunities for audience participation and The Shapes! When we watch Mister Maker at home, the kids all get up and bounce around when Circle, Square, Rectangle and Triangle appear on screen.

Disney On Ice Magical Ice Festival Giveaway!

We are huge Disney fans here in the Wee household and we can’t wait to catch Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival at Singapore Indoor Stadium during the March school holidays from 11 Mar to 20 Mar. Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival will feature magical moments all the way from the wintery world of Frozen to the watery wonderland of The Little Mermaid. The spectacular show will also include Rapunzel and Flynn from Tangled and the enchanted setting of Beauty and the Beast!

The kids are really looking forward to see their favourite princesses in action and I bet they will be frozen to their seats (haha…) when Elsa and Anna take the stage. Personally, I love to see the mascots like Mickey Mouse and gang on skates! They look so ungainly in their costumes but can somehow glide across the ice so gracefully and are simply mesmerising to watch.

My Favourite Nursery Rhymes from Royal Rae

David loves books. When we are in the car, he always wants to hold on to a book and at bedtime, I have to read him the same story several times before he’s willing to let go of whichever book he’s hanging on to! On weekends, we drive around quite a bit and David gets restless easily unless we play some Hi-5 music. Recently, we got hold of a busy book from Royal Rae and it keep him happily engaged in the car for a good length of time!

Royal Rae was started by Cecilia, a mother of a six-year-old girl. She observed that handcrafted toys were much better in encouraging her daughter’s creativity and imagination so she set up Royal Rae to offer a selection of high quality and engaging handcrafted toys to maximise the potential of children. We tried out ‘My Favourite Nursery Rhymes’ from Royal Rae on David and it was a hit!

‘My Favourite Nursery Rhymes’ has beautifully designed pictures accompanying familiar and well-loved nursery rhymes. David enjoyed listening to the nursery rhymes and also sat quietly lifting up flaps to help Little Bo Peep find her sheep, helping the mouse to run up the clock and the cow to jump over the moon, and putting poor old Humpty Dumpty back together again. The only ‘drawback’ was that his older siblings were so interested in his busy book that they kept trying to borrow it from him!

The toys from Royal Rae have to be approved by Cecilia’s husband, a Developmental Psychologist and Associate Professor at a local university in Singapore. Together, they ensure that the toys have High Cognitive Value (Math/ Language/ IQ) and High Sensorial Value (Dexterity/ Touch Sensitivity).

Royal Rae products are designed to be safe and durable. Wooden toys have rounded edges and corners and are sanded by hand. Fabric toys have all sides triple sewn to ensure a secure fit. No batteries are required because the child is encouraged to use his or her own imagination! They are easy to bring along for car rides and flights and can keep a child entertained for a substantial amount of time.

Indoor Fun with Tickle Your Senses

The haze is really getting me down. Every time I think things are getting better and we have a few blue sky days in a row, the haze returns with a vengeance and outdoor activities are cancelled. We have been staying in a lot more than usual so I’m grateful for Tickle Your Senses and their lovely sensory kits that are keeping the kids busy and the adults sane.

Tickle Your Senses was started by two mums, Felicia and Chiao Chyi, who wanted the best sensory play experiences for their children. So a lot of experimentation, planning, and love have gone into perfecting the kits available. There are playdough kits with cute and safe cutters for kids to squish and shape, and water beads kits for fun water play.

Tickle Your Senses

Tickle Your Senses

To be very honest, I dislike the typical play dough you buy in toy stores. The dough gets stuck everywhere, it smells funny, and I don’t like how it feels in my hands. Any commercial dough sets given to the kids as presents will *ahem* mysteriously disappear from the house without a trace. In fact, the only dough I let the kids play with is the homemade sort, but I’m way too lazy to make playdough in different colours so I’m glad Tickle Your Senses has solved that problem for me!

The playdough smells good, has a great texture, and doesn’t get hopelessly stuck on every possible surface. They add a drop of essential oil to engage your child’s sense of smell when playing with the dough but you can opt for unscented dough if you prefer. The playdough is made of plain flour, salt, water, cream of tartar, oil and food coloring and is taste-safe for little ones.

The playdough kits are available in a wide range of cutters from fruits and animals, to alphabets and numbers. You can also get accessories like extruders, scissors, rollers, and even a playdough mat to keep the mess under control. We chose the alphabet kit since Adam is still learning his letters and sounds, and the body parts kit because it’s just so amusing!

Playing with playdough helps with fine motor development, builds strength in the hands (very important for handwriting), and encourages imagination and creativity. The kids can sit and play with playdough for hours and hours and not get bored because there really is no limit to what they can make with the dough.

The kids adore water play but the weather has been keeping us indoors. We haven’t had swimming classes for more than a month now! The water beads kits from Tickle Your Senses are such a great alternative to outdoor water play. They are so calming, smooth, cool and squishy that I couldn’t resist grabbing some and just holding them in my hands as the kids scooped the water beads from one container to another and back again.

The water beads kit comes with one jar of pre-soaked water beads and a tiny packet of unsoaked beads. I was sceptical about the volume of beads we were going to get with that little packet but it turned out to be many times that of the one jar and now we have lots of beads to play with.

All Tickle Your Senses sensory kits and materials are sent via fast courier mail to ensure that your purchases are well-kept and in good condition when they reach your hands. Shipping is $7 flat rate for any number of products and you enjoy free shipping via courier when you spend $80 or more (so grab a few friends and order together!)

GIVEAWAY! :)

To help your kids beat the boredom of being confined indoors, we have one playdough kit and one water beads kit from Tickle Your Senses to give away! One winner will be picked for each kit so there will be a total of two winners.

To qualify, simply do the following by Wednesday, 21 October 2015, 2359H (Singapore time):
1. Like the ‘In the Wee HoursFacebook page.
2. Like the ‘Tickle Your SensesFacebook page.

AIR+ Smart Mask Review

The haze is back and ‘Smoke Gets in My Eyes’ keeps playing in my head. The PSI has gotten better the last couple of days but the PM 2.5 is still at an unhealthy level. When the haze started getting really bad last week, every one was rushing to buy N95 masks and the masks were flying off the shelves! We were really regretting not stocking up the last time the haze struck.

Fortunately, we were given some AIR+ Smart Mask to review. The Smart Mask is the first mask that is ergonomically designed with three mask sizes, nose cushions, and adjustable headstraps to achieve a close fit for protection and comfort. They really are a lot more comfortable to wear than the other brands available on the market, especially when you attach the AIR+ micro ventilator to the mask.

With the AIR+ attached, you get enhanced protection with the quick removal of heat, moisture and carbon dioxide and can experience greater breathability and cooler airflow when wearing the mask over an extended period of time. This is particularly important for children who may resist wearing a mask because of discomfort.

3 different sizes

L, M, S

The AIR+ micro ventilator gives the AIR+ Smart Mask an edge over the other masks available out there. It is light-weight and fits onto any size of the Smart Mask. The AIR+ is powered by a built-in rechargeable lithium-polymer battery and charging is done via USB or power adaptor. With each charge, the AIR+ can be used for 2 hours and the average shelf life of the AIR+ is up to 1000 battery hours (or can be used 500 times on a 2 hour/ use basis).

On its own, the Smart Mask offers wearers adequate protection against airborne contaminants. But the AIR+ is highly recommended for children, as it removes accumulated carbon dioxide that may result in physiological impact such as giddiness or headache.

The Small, Medium, and Large sizes are based on digital scans and tests performed on Asian facial profiles. The Smart Mask Small size is suitable for a 7 year-old child with a typical Asian facial profile.

To determine the right mask size to purchase, you can use the measurement gauge found on the product packaging to match the distance from the eye to the bottom of the chin. Anya is an S, while I fit an M and the husband, an L.

AIR+ Smart Mask is available at Watsons, Guardian and Unity stores island-wide. It makes sense to stock up on some for every one in the family because we know the haze will inevitably be back to terrorise us again.

Getting Along Swimmingly with The Swimming Room (Plus a Giveaway!)

There are so many classes for children these days. You can pick from typical academic ones like Math, Chinese and Science, or sign your kid up for more exotic classes like circus arts, belly dancing, yoga or even mermaid school!

We are always keen to let the kids try new stuff if they are interested but the one enrichment class that is non-negotiable is swimming. The husband feels that water safety is the top priority and feels very strongly that the kids must know how to swim.

Anya started swimming with Eugene of The Swimming Room when she was 3 years old. At her first lesson, she kept crying and wanting me to get into the pool with her and she didn’t want to put her face in the water at all. Eugene was so patient with her, reassured her repeatedly and got her to go through all the activities. After a few lessons, she started looking forward to her weekly swimming class and it was hard to get her out of the pool after class! You can read more about Anya’s experiences with The Swimming Room here, here and here.

Of course, when it was Adam’s turn to start swimming, I immediately signed him up for classes with Eugene. Adam is not confident at all in the pool and would usually cling to me like a barnacle when we go swimming, so I thought I would have to wait a long time before he started to enjoy his swimming classes.

I was pleasantly surprised that he was keen to participate from the first lesson even though he was clearly nervous about being in the water. He’s so comfortable with Eugene and it’s clear that Adam trusts Eugene to take care of him in the pool. It’s been a few months since he started swimming and his water confidence level is so much higher than it used to be and he always looks forward to his swimming lessons.

Back when I was trying to sign Anya up for swimming lessons, I was quite boggled by the number of options available and I had no way of knowing whether that particular swimming school or coach was good. Some of the swimming schools I tried contacting didn’t even bother getting back to me and it was all rather frustrating. So I’m really glad I managed to find Eugene and The Swimming Room!

Since the holidays are round the corner, you may be thinking of checking out some swim schools for your child but may not know where to start looking. Here’s your chance to cross that one item off your list!

I have a THREE session passes to be won by three lucky readers! Each session pass entitles you to 3 lessons. Do look at the table below to ensure that there is a session your child is able to attend.

Heart of Youth – Swensen’s Celebrates Mother’s Day (with a Giveaway!)

Heart of Youth

Heart of Youth

Being a mother is not the most glamourous of roles. When I’m at work, I’m usually in quite a presentable state. On weekends however, I’m always busy running around trying to keep up with the kids so I don’t bother to spend time brushing my hair or even dressing up. My weekend uniform is usually that of a t-shirt and yoga pants. But I love that the kids keep me young at heart even though I don’t always  feel very young and energetic!

My mother takes care of the kids on most weekdays and they are a real handful so she usually looks harassed and disheveled. She was a bit embarrassed about taking a photo with the cake in what she claimed to be an unkempt state. I think she looks pretty good! Swensen’s Heart of Youth cake is perfect for this relatively young grandmother. Vanilla fudge ice-cream infused with marine collagen keeps her youthful and ensures that her skin and bones stay healthy!

Since motherhood is all about the kids and not about the glamour, here’s a picture of me at my most unglamourous. Show your appreciation for your mother, mother-in-law, or even your grandmother this Mother’s Day with Heart of Youth: a blush pink heart-shaped cake with sugar flowers and a white chocolate crown to show her who the Queen of your heart is!

Heart of Youth is priced at $51 (excluding GST) and no advanced ordering is required. Available at all Swensen’s and Earle Swensen’s outlets from 23rd April to 10th May 2015 (while stocks last).
