Masak Masak at National Museum of Singapore

We look forward to the Children’s Season programme at National Museum of Singapore every year and the kids always have fun even though there are usually some hits and misses. We love how Playgrounds on the Lawn looks but have never actually played on them. It’s only available for play on weekends from 10 am to 12 pm and 4 to 6 pm. Every year I give the same feedback about how the programmes and activities that are only available on weekends should be made available at least on one weekday since it’s the school holidays after all!

In the basement, you can find Memory Stations where kids can learn about the art of woodblock printing and also stamp different shapes on paper. They had fun stamping but didn’t really bother with the exhibition. I wonder if there’s a better way to connect the activity with the exhibition because I found the woodblock prints very interesting but the activity was not that similar to woodblock printing.

Also in the basement is Wanderlust. The enchanted forest is visually very attractive to children but there’s nothing much to do there. Before entering, the kids were told not to run and not to touch anything. I feel that art for children should be as interactive as possible and I didn’t like having to follow the kids every step of the way telling them not to touch anything.

Back on Level 1, the kids spent a lot of time playing Garden Games. This was probably their favourite section. I liked how the eraser game and the retro pasar malam ring toss game were converted into giant versions in Flag Attack! and Can or Not? but I felt that the Hello, Hello? cups and string set-up could be a wee bit unhygienic. Somewhere in between were the see-no-touch Dancing Solar Flowers.

Anya said her favourite part was Luma-City on the 3rd floor. We had trouble finding it because it’s tucked away in a little corner, but we had it all to ourselves so the kids went quite mad pushing the vehicles around and leaving light trails in their wake.

Finally, we visited the Salon on Level 1 twice. Once on a weekend for the Queen of the Forest puppet performance, and once on a weekday to avoid the crowds. Anya is doing a school project on puppets so we spent some time there making a puppet. Before leaving for lunch, the kids did some coloring at Simple Pleasures in Life and etching at Life’s Best Journey is With the One You Love. Simple activities but the kids liked it and I did a bit of colouring too.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve – Fun at the Extension!

A few weeks ago, we visited Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and the kids had quite a bit of fun there but we didn’t stay long because it was so HOT! We went to the extension that has the new Visitor Centre and it’s located along Kranji Way. Their favourite bit was the Junior Adventure Trail just outside the Visitor Centre.

We covered only a very small area that day and didn’t really encounter any wildlife (except the mosquitoes) but before we left, the kids were already asking to visit again. Check out the NParks website for things to do at SBWR, information about guided walks, and worksheets for kids.

Sand Play at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park #FrisoMoment

Whenever we get some free time during the weekends or the school holidays, I like to take the kids to the playground! Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is huge and has several playgrounds, both wet and dry, and we visited one of the playgrounds recently.

This particular playground looks really interesting. It’s mainly wood, metal and ropes, very different from the usual plasticky ones we see these days. We were actually on the bus on our way home when we went by the playground and we couldn’t resist getting off the bus to check it out.

It was a really hot day but the kids had so much fun running around, climbing up, sliding down and digging in the sand. The spider web connected to the slide was quite challenging and I climbed up with the kids a couple of times. I love the fact that taking the kids to a playground allows me to behave like a kid too. And I get some much-needed exercise in the process!

Old Dragon Playground at Ang Mo Kio

When I was a kid, my paternal grandmother lived in Ang Mo Kio and we would visit her occasionally. From time to time, my cousins would take me down to the dragon playground nearby to play. And many years later, I’m playing at that same playground with my own kids.

This particular playground is at Blk 571 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 and is about one or two bus stops away from Ang Mo Kio MRT Station. The sand has been replaced by the spongy flooring found in modern playgrounds and I actually prefer it because I always imagine cats using the playground as a giant litter box.

Our kids these days have such exciting playgrounds: wet and dry, indoor and outdoor, free and at a fee. I honestly thought they would be quite underwhelmed by the dragon playground and maybe just hang around for a bit to humour me and let me take photos. But Anya and Adam were ecstatic when they saw the dragon and they spent loads of time there chasing each other up and down the dragon’s back. I’m glad I could share this piece of my childhood with them and that they had so much fun there!

My other heritage playground posts are from 2011 and one of the playgrounds has since been demolished. Sad face. Read about the Toa Payoh dragon playground, the Dakota Crescent seal playground and the Clementi sparrow playground.

Pasir Ris Park

It’s actually Anya’s 6th birthday today and I want to talk about her but I’m seriously overwhelmed by emotions after looking through her pictures so I’ll leave that for another day. A couple of weeks ago, we visited Pasir Ris Park. It’s been ages since we were there and probably the kids’ first time and we were pleasantly surprised to see several interesting structures for them to play on.

We were starving and wanted to grab a bite before playing but the eateries in Pasir Ris Park were all closed or under renovations. So we decided to let the kids have some fun before we headed somewhere else for food. Carpark E is the nearest to the playground area and there’s just so much space for the kids to run away and so many different things for them to do there! We could have spent hours there but needed to get food and it was quite a hazy day so we had to drag the kids away eventually.

Birdz of Play at Jurong Bird Park

Birdz of Play at Jurong Bird Park has finally reopened! It was closed for maintenance for quite a long time but now that we can visit for free with our SG50 promotional annual pass, we’ll probably drop by quite often.

Birdz of Play is very similar to the wet playground at the Zoo and is near enough to the main entrance of the Bird Park that you can walk instead of waiting for the tram. There’s an ice-cream place there with hot dogs, muffins and such and a retail shop where you can buy swimwear and other essentials if you didn’t bring any along.

David’s 1st Birthday – Party at Happy Willow

It’s been almost a month since David’s birthday party at Happy Willow and I’m finally getting around to blogging about it. Have been very busy with work and so tired every day and I crash after the kids go to bed and have no time to sit in front of the computer!

Since David doesn’t have any actual friends, the party was more for our friends and their kids to gather and hang out. It was quite casual and we didn’t have any particular theme for the party. Now that we have three kids, I’m a lot less hung up about party prep and goody bags and all the peripheral stuff. As long we have a location and food, there’s really no need to worry about anything else.

It was so nice to have our friends with us to celebrate David’s first birthday. My sister (Alpha Bakes) made an amazingly delicious and pretty cake for him. The kids had a lot of fun at Happy Willow and were moving around so quickly that we didn’t manage to get any good photos of them. We did get them to stay still long enough for some pictures at the photo booth though!
