Uma Uma Ramen at Forum

The thing about the kids having classes at a particular shopping mall is that we get to try all the different cafes and restaurants there! Last Saturday, we went to Uma Uma Ramen. This is the first Uma Uma Ramen outlet outside Japan since they started in 1953.

Fifi had the Uma Uma Ramen and I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen. Both were delicious. The thin noodles were springy and the broth was rich and satisfying. The slices of pork belly were tender and tasty. It was a cold, rainy evening and the ramen really hit the spot.

Union Farm Eating House

Union Farm Eating House has been around since the 50s and they invented Chee Pow Kai (paper wrapped chicken). It was supposed to close for good last February when SIM asked for the return of a part of the plot of land but now it has reopened with a smaller kitchen.

We went there last Sunday for dinner and there were quite a few other tables occupied. The menu is limited but sufficient for a simple meal. The food was served quickly and without fuss.

I liked the paper wrapped chicken even though I’m usually not fond of chicken. It was tasty, juicy and tender. We ordered 20 pieces for the 9 of us and had no problem finishing the plate of chicken. They don’t serve rice there so we ordered egg noodles and bee hoon. Both were very basic but complemented the chicken and the rest of the food.

The lady who took our order recommended the prawns in special sauce and the sauce was really yummy. We also tried the fried quails (they are tiny!) and I had a good time crunching down on the head and neck of a little quail, bones and all. Surprisingly, Anya liked the quail as well.

The food is good, though not spectacular, but eating at Union Farm Eating House is such an experience in itself. I love that the place has been around for more than 60 years and is so different from your typical featureless food court and kopitiam. It’s definitely worth visiting and I’m really glad it didn’t close down.

Nam Nam Noodle Bar at Raffles City

I’m a big pho fan but haven’t really managed to have very good pho in Singapore. The best pho I’ve ever had was in Melbourne! I usually go to Pho Hoa at Holland Village whenever I need a pho fix because it’s the most accessible location for me. But Von and I were at Raffles City the other day and we saw Nam Nam Noodle Bar so we decided to give it a try.

The decor is quite appealing and I like the different Vietnamese sauces they have on each table and the old school Double Happiness metal cups. The lunch set is really good value for money at $9.90 for spring rolls, pho and coffee/ tea. But we were there after 3pm so we missed out on that.

The spring rolls were a bit of a disappointment because the rice paper wrap for the spring rolls was hard to bite into! I’ve never had such tough spring rolls before, even when we made them at home on our own. Maybe Nam Nam gave us the leftovers from the lunch set instead of making fresh ones for us. The dipping sauce was nice though.

Fortunately, the noodles were much better. The broth for my beef steak pho was quite yummy and the slices of beef were tender. I really like the texture of the noodles! The pho didn’t come with any bean sprouts though so I was missing the crunch. Von’s mousetail noodle soup (pork belly bee tai mak) had a delicious broth but the pork was a little bit tough.

I wouldn’t mind going back again for the pho, especially since I get quite a craving on cold, rainy days and it seems that these days every other day is a cold and rainy one! But I’ll probably not order the spring rolls again unless I’m getting them as part of the lunch set.

Penang Kitchen at Coronation Arcade

We had lunch at Penang Kitchen on National Day. I’ve been wanting to drop by since Debs blogged about the place and it’s actually very near where I work.

I love Penang food and I was quite impressed by all the food we ordered. The choon piah was crispy and delicious and disappeared really quickly. The lor bak was quite yummy too.

Anya shared some char kway teow with Spink and looked pretty satisfied with her meal. My prawn noodles had a great soup base and I’m definitely ordering the seafood mee sua kor the next time I go because I love vinegar in my food.

We were too full for dessert so that’s something to look forward to for our next visit!

Penang: Char Kway Teow at Kafe Heng Huat

Shortly after we arrived in Penang on Monday afternoon, we made our way to Kafe Heng Huat at Lorong Selamat to eat the char kway teow that is said to be the best in Penang. It was good! The wok hei was there, the prawns were large and fresh and the bean sprouts were crunchy. I would have liked more cockles and lup cheong though. But on the whole, it was satisfying, albeit expensive at RM8.

After the CKT, we walked down the street and had some prawn noodles, ice kachang and cendol. All very decent although the cendol could have done with more gula melaka.
