Seussical the Musical

Seussical the Musical

Seussical the Musical

Seussical the Musical begins with monkeys scampering wildly through the audience and the action does not let up for the rest of the 75 minutes! Wacky, lively and loud, Seussical the Musical takes the audience through the story of Horton Hears a Who! and Horton Hatches an Egg with lots of impressive singing and animated dancing along the way.

Horton the Elephant hears a sound coming from a small speck of dust and he places it on a clover. He discovers that the speck is actually a tiny planet and home to an entire community and he vows to protect Whoville because “a person’s a person, no matter how small.” Along the way, he is mocked by the other animals in the jungle for believing in something that they are unable to see or hear.

The beloved Cat in the Hat is on hand (with his signature red and white striped hat) to provide non-stop zany entertainment. One minute he’s a doctor, and the next he’s making it snow on one of the characters. The other animals are dressed in cleverly-conceptualised costumes that make them seem more like humans than animals, allowing us to relate to their very human traits and to see ourselves in their behaviour.

Although the story went over the heads of the younger ones a little and is more suitable for children above 5, the kids had fun watching the show. Our favourite bit was when the Mayor of Whoville got the audience involved in alerting Horton’s jungle friends to the existence of life on the speck of dust, reminding the kids of the importance of standing up for what you believe in and the power of teamwork. I also enjoyed the spirited rendition of Green Eggs & Ham by the cast during curtain call.

Saturday Night Fever

I’ve got a fever! I’m hot! I can’t be stopped! And it’s a… Saturday Night Fever!! Didn’t know what to expect from this production based on the highly popular movie of the same name, but we were highly entertained and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. The songs have been stuck in my head since and I’m listening to them on repeat.

The Saturday Night Fever movie came out before I was born but I love The Bee Gees and all the songs in the show are so familiar to me. Featuring catchy tunes from the film such as ‘Stayin’ Alive’, ‘Night Fever’, ‘More Than A Woman’, ‘Tragedy’, ‘Disco Inferno’, ‘How Deep is Your Love’, and ‘You Should Be Dancing’, Saturday Night Fever is set in 1976 and follows the story of Tony Manero, a wannabe disco king from a rough neighborhood in Brooklyn. Stuck in a dead-end job, he lives for Saturday night when he rules the dance floor a local discotheque. When Tony meets Stephanie Mangano, an office worker trying to make it in Manhattan, they both train together for a dance competition, and Tony discovers that Stephanie is more than a woman to him.

From start to finish, the fancy footwork and powerful singing kept me moving to the music in my seat. I bet many in the audience wanted to get up on their feet to sing and dance along with the cast! It was especially impressive that they could sing and hit all the high notes while moving so energetically. I thought the sets were very cleverly designed and made excellent use of the space in how they managed to transform a disco to Tony’s home, to a (very convincing) bridge, and everything else in between in a matter of seconds.

Saturday Night Fever is a must-watch for the the passionate singing, expressive dancing, charismatic actors, and the sizzling chemistry between the leads Brendan Rubendall (as Tony Manero) and Jenna Rubaii (as Stephanie Mangano) who are perfectly cast in their roles. Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother, catch the fever while you can!

Imperial Ice Stars – Sleeping Beauty on Ice

Given enough room, I could probably skate a couple of rounds around a rink without falling down on my face. But that would be the extent of my limited ice-skating abilities. The Imperial Ice Stars are on the absolute opposite end of the scale and watching them in action in Sleeping Beauty on Ice was like nothing I’ve ever seen. I was entranced from beginning to end.

The mesmerising production features a 18-strong cast of Olympic, World, European and National Championship level skaters, with choreography by the award-winning Tony Mercer, widely regarded as the world’s leading creator of theatre on ice. The performers moved with such grace and ease even when attempting the most complicated manoeuvres and flourishes that we simply could not take our eyes off them for even an instance.

Set to the grand and familiar music of Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty on Ice tells the classic fairytale love story through sublime world class skating, breathtaking high speed lifts and throws, awe-inspiring aerial acrobatics and pyrotechnics. Not a single word was uttered during the performance and yet every emotion could be felt palpably and every nuance understood. Anya was able to follow the story-line easily and was keep entertained throughout the 2½ hours performance

The Imperial Ice Stars in Sleeping Beauty is a spectacular performance that will entranced all ages. I simply adored the bit at the end when all the performers have taken their bow and start showing off to the oohs and ahhs of the audience. Don’t miss this show!

A Splashin’ Good Time at Singin’ in the Rain!

Singing in the Rain

Singing in the Rain

We caught Singin’ in the Rain last Friday and were absolutely soaked by the energy of the singing and dancing. Set in 1927 in the waning days of silent movies, it tells the story of the first Hollywood musical, when ‘talkies’ became all the rage and left silent movies – and some of its stars – behind.

I have not seen the iconic 1952 MGM movie starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds but I certainly know some of the songs from the movie. And what a treat it is for Singapore audiences to get a chance to watch Singin’ in the Rain after a sell-out West End season in 2012, four Olivier Award nominations, and a major UK tour.

Singin’ in the Rain tells the story of popular romantic lead, Don Lockwood. His leading lady, Lina Lamont, is beautiful but has an annoyingly screechy and nasal voice. When talkies start becoming popular and silent movies fall out of favour, Don and his sidekick, Cosmo Brown, have to figure out a way to cash in on the talkies without letting Lina’s grating voice ruin them all. Don falls in love with aspiring actress, Kathy Selden, and she provides the solution to their problems.

There’s lots of singing and dancing to keep things lively and plenty of comic relief as well. Each time Lina Lamont opened her mouth to speak, she got the people in the audience in stitches and received lots of applause for her efforts during the curtain call. I loved the songs Good Morning, Moses Supposes and, of course, the classic Singin’ in the Rain.

Without a doubt, my favourite scenes were the ones where it rained! Using 12,000 litres of water, Don Lockwood literally sings in the rain and the audience in the first four or five rows of the theatre leave a little wetter than when they arrived! Not to worry, they get ponchos to shield themselves and the rest of the audience get a kick out of watching them scramble to put the ponchos on. What an unforgettable experience for everyone!

Muse Arts June Holiday Camp

The two older kids took part in My Amazing Body, a June holiday programme by Muse Arts at Natasha Studio, City Square Mall. They had a delightful time singing, dancing, doing craft and learning amazing facts about their body. The kids were particularly enthusiastic about destroying germs! It was a drop-off class so I managed to run some errands during that time before returning in the last half hour to watch their presentation.

We are actually very keen to take part in their Jungle Rumble programme on Mon, 22 June from 10 am to 12 pm but we already have something on that day. You can get 10% off the registration fees (S$50) for the Jungle Rumble programme if you quote ‘lifeintheweehours’ when you register your child(ren) by Fri, 19 June 2015. Call them at 81332251 or  for enquiries and registration.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff by SRT’s The Little Company

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Ever get the feeling that the grass is greener on the other side? Well, sometimes, it actually is. That’s because an evil troll’s painted all the grass on his side of the valley green in a bid to feed his muttony gluttony.

brings new meaning to trolling

brings new meaning to trolling

The Three Billy Goats Gruff tells the time- honoured story of the 3 billy goats- one small, one medium and one large, who, because they were running out of food, hatched a plan to cross over to the other side of the valley where the grass is (literally) greener.

The only problem? A troll guards the only bridge and he is intent on exacting his “troll-toll”. Together with their rather airy-headed minder, Bo Frilly (yes, sister of Bo Peep), they hatch an elaborate plan to elude the troll. In the process, they discover the troll’s deep, dark secret and use it to their aaaaadvantage.

This musical was genuinely good for people of all ages. The costumes and sets are both beautiful and immersive, while the plot moves along fast enough to keep the little ones’ attention. Musically, the show was brilliant. Lyrics were witty and elaborately crafted, while the music was surprisingly adventurous for a children’s musical. Rock ‘n roll and techno blended seamlessly amongst showtunes, ensuring that there was never a dull moment.

I think the best way to describe this is that if I could find a way not to look creepy, I’d pay good money to see this show again by myself.
