Mid-Autumn Festival @ The Gardens 2014

I love Mid-Autumn Festival! I mean, what’s not to love? Who doesn’t like mooncakes and lanterns? I’m so glad that Mid-Autumn Festival falls during the September school holidays this year. I visited Mid-Autumn Festival @ The Gardens with the husband, all 3 kids and my 2 aunts earlier today and we had a fun time eating and looking at the lanterns. I liked that even though there were a lot of people there, it wasn’t unpleasantly crowded and felt very festive indeed.

There are nightly performances by artistes from Chongqing Song & Dance Troupe and Guangdong Arts Troupe at Supertree Grove. I treated myself to some smelly tofu and fried Oreos at the Asian Food Street (at Palm Court near the Planet Baby sculpture). There’s also Korean street food, okonomiyaki, burgers and more!

I was immensely impressed by the majestic water lantern displays featuring the Ancient Chinese Palace, The Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea and the Treasure Voyages of Cheng Ho. The kids liked the lanterns featuring landmarks of different countries. There are also interesting thematic lantern set pieces of Racial Harmony in Singapore, SEA Games 2015, and of course, the Chinese Zodiac. I also took many photos of the lanterns depicting Chinese culture and traditions in Taiwan.

It’s a week to Mid-Autumn Festival, one of my favourite traditional Chinese festivals! I love the colourful lanterns and I’m crazy about mooncakes. It’s difficult to find a box of mooncakes the entire family would be happy with. I only eat snowskin mooncakes, the husband likes chocolate in his desserts, Adam wants durian, Anya likes all things pink, and we all love ice-cream!

We went down to Singapore River last Sunday to look at lanterns and soak in the atmosphere. There were lanterns in the shape of the 12 Zodiac animals and floats depicting the various Chinese festivals.

We walked down by the river and across the bridge and back again. My folks continued on to Hong Lim Park where there were more performances and entries from a creative lantern-making competition.

It’s 中秋节 but I can’t even see the moon because it’s obscured by the horrible haze! Well, at least I’ve eaten my fill of mooncakes for the season. Although I’m stuck at home, Anya has had a lot of fun these few days attending the various celebrations in the neighbourhood with my mum and aunt. Will put up pictures when I finally get to go home at the end of this week!

My mum bought a bag of 菱角 (ling jiao) for the Mid-Autumn Festival. We used to have them every year when I was a kid but not so much in recent years. I’ve been reading up a bit on the water caltrop which is also known as buffalo nut, bat nut and devil pod. It’s from the same family as the water chestnut and is the seed of some aquatic plant. I read somewhere that eating this is supposed to make kids smarter! I think they look quite freaky!

Let’s hope the haze clears up soon!

Anya at Abrakadoodle: First Illumination Art Doodle

For her Abrakadoodle class on Saturday, Anya doodled on a piece of paper with crayons/markers/paint and the paper was then made into a lantern in preparation for Mid-Autumn Festival. I didn’t really get the point of this because the final product was just a total mess. Perhaps the kids could have gotten more guidance on what to draw on the piece of paper or could have used materials like coloured cellophane which would at least have some interesting effect when lit up from within! Otherwise, it’s just a random doodle that’s rolled up into a tube. -_-

When I was a kid growing up in a shophouse in Little India, we used to celebrate Mid-Autumn festival by hanging up lanterns in the back lane behind where we were staying and eating mooncakes and drinking tea. It was lots of fun and I’m glad Anya got to celebrate in a similar way last night. My parents are moving to a new block next year and the place they’re staying at will be torn down. So mum’s been feeling a bit nostalgic and decided to get some neighbours together to celebrate downstairs with lanterns and mooncakes since it’s the last time they’d be at the old place.
