David’s Birth Story told by Daddy

I wrote a birth story for each child after every birth so for this Birth Stories blog train, I’ve invited the husband to tell the story of David’s birth from his side of things. For the record, my greatest achievement for this birth was remembering to put on some tinted lip balm before the delivery. You can read the birth stories for Anya, Adam and David at the respective links if you’re interested.

You arrived in a whirlwind of chaos. I don’t remember much of the pregnancy. Bear in mind that, at this time, your sister and brother were 4 and 2 respectively and always up to no good. I do remember that they were very excited about their new brother, and asked almost every day when you would get here.

I also remember that we had a scare early on when one of your tests came back slightly dodgy- there was a higher-than-normal chance that you would have Down’s, or worse. Things were difficult for a while as your mum and I did a lot of praying and planning for the worst. Fortunately, further tests assured us that you were ok (save that there is no test for extreme naughtiness).

The birth was over before we knew it. Like old pros, we made sure to have a nice dinner before we checked into the hospital. I think this time I actually managed to get some sleep that night. They came early in the morning to wheel your mum away [editor’s note: he makes me sound like a dim sum cart!] and I was off to wait in the Dad’s waiting room. Sitting there with other nervous family members, it felt familiar, and I was reminded of the many sleepless nights that were to follow, as well as the countless moments of joy that I was sure to have with you as you grew up.

The doc paged for me, and I went to put on my scrubs. No explanation was needed (old pro, remember?) and, before long, I was in the operating theatre. You came out just like your siblings – bad tempered, covered in gunk and generally gross. You were a lightweight, not much bigger than a guinea pig, but screamed like a 2 ton banshee.

I left you to the nurses and went upstairs to wait for Mum. That was where the drama started. An hour stretched into 2, and then 3. It was close to noon before the doctor called me to tell me there had been some complications but that it had all been resolved. Apparently, they couldn’t stop the bleeding and your mum had to be put under general anaesthetic for more comprehensive repair work [editor’s note: now I sound like a broken-down car]. The last thing she heard was the doctor saying “cancel all my appointments!”. Mum is sure to remind you all about how she almost died giving birth to you, every time you are naughty.

Watching your sister and brother meet you for the first time was priceless. They were so excited to meet you, and haven’t stopped being crazy about you since. We weren’t expecting you to come into our lives, but now that you are here, we can’t imagine life without you.

Yann is a mother to two little men who, unfortunately, believe strongly that sleep is for the weak. Therefore, she sleeps too little (for her liking) and drinks too much teh-si. She suffers from Acute Mother Guiltilitis and is also addicted to writing and photography.

A mother of 8 year old Isaac and 5 year old twins Asher & Shawna, Pamela looks back on the birth of her children and wonders where all the years have gone but the fats seem here to stay.

Fisher-Price Play IQ Subscription Box

Subscription boxes are really popular these days. You can now get beauty products, food, clothing, and even craft activities delivered regularly by subscription. Play IQ Box by Fisher-Price takes it to a whole new level by sending you age-appropriate toys for your kid!

I blogged about Play IQ previously and mentioned that I took the Fisher-Price Play IQ quiz to assess David’s level of development. This quiz helps the parent to keep track of the child’s physical, cognitive and social & emotional progress.  After doing the quiz, you can sign up for the Play IQ Box to ensure that your child is playing with toys that are appropriate for his age and development.

For our Play IQ Box, we received the Laugh & Learn Learning Wallet and the Brilliant Basics Walker-to-Wagon. The Learning Wallet has a soft dollar bill, a pop-up credit card and push-button coins help develop fine motor skills. David loves to open and close the wallet to listen to the sing-along songs. I love it because it’s small and portable and I can throw it into the diaper bag to bring along for our outings.

The Laugh & Learn Learning Wallet is suitable for children aged 6 – 36 months and helps baby to learn about numbers, opposites and greetings. The older ones (yes, even Anya!) like this toy very much too and are always trying to borrow it from their baby brother!

The other toy in our Play IQ box is the Brilliant Basics Walker-to-Wagon. This grow-with-me walker is perfect for helping early walkers build confidence and then easily converts to a pull-along wagon once your toddler is steady on his feet.

There are fun activities built right into the walker including big spinning beads, a clicking dial, a roller ball to spin, a jingle ball to bat, colourful pages to flip, and shapes to sort. Again, the older kids could not resist playing with the toy and were racing around the house with the walker!

I think both toys are really suitable for David’s current level of development and he’s clearly very pleased with them as well.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy

David’s latest trick is to do the actions to the song Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes. Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy helps to reinforce this by introducing baby to different parts of the body like the tummy, hand, foot and ear.

There are two interactive play modes: the first introduces ABCs, 123s, colours and parts of the body. The second mode plays favourite songs like Itsy-Bitsy Spider, Pat-A-Cake, This Little Puppy Went to Market and more. You can switch between the modes or turn the toy off completely by pressing the puppy’s left foot.

We have quite a few toys from Fisher-Price but they are not always portable and are best played with while we at home. Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy is soft and cuddly, and easy to bring along with us. The baby likes to hug it while we are travelling around in the car and I think it makes him feel secure.

The cute design, soft fabrics, bright colours and clear letters make the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy a great learning tool for children aged 6 months to 36 months. It is ideal for playing with before bedtime and on-the-go!

David’s 1st Birthday – Party at Happy Willow

It’s been almost a month since David’s birthday party at Happy Willow and I’m finally getting around to blogging about it. Have been very busy with work and so tired every day and I crash after the kids go to bed and have no time to sit in front of the computer!

Since David doesn’t have any actual friends, the party was more for our friends and their kids to gather and hang out. It was quite casual and we didn’t have any particular theme for the party. Now that we have three kids, I’m a lot less hung up about party prep and goody bags and all the peripheral stuff. As long we have a location and food, there’s really no need to worry about anything else.

It was so nice to have our friends with us to celebrate David’s first birthday. My sister (Alpha Bakes) made an amazingly delicious and pretty cake for him. The kids had a lot of fun at Happy Willow and were moving around so quickly that we didn’t manage to get any good photos of them. We did get them to stay still long enough for some pictures at the photo booth though!

Fisher-Price Musical Lion Walker

David’s current favourite toy is the Fisher-Price Musical Lion Walker. He’s currently standing well on his own but hasn’t starting walking yet so this toy gives him the mobility that he craves while providing the stability that he needs. He’s fond of fiddling around with all the interactive bits on the lion and is quite a speed demon when walking around with the lion.

The Musical Lion Walker is pretty easy to set up (you will need a Philips head screwdriver) and requires 2 AA batteries. There’s a peek-a-boo mirror that David loves to look into, rollerball ears & clacker-bead toes to spin, a light-up nose for visual appeal, and musical piano keys to make noise with. All these little bits combine to help strengthen fine motor skills, stimulate developing senses, and helps develop balance and coordination.

As walkers go, I really like the Fisher-Price Musical Lion Walker because it looks cute and is multi-functional. David makes a beeline for it when it’s time to play and the walker clearly serves its purpose of encouraging baby to walk.

David is 3 Months Old!

David 3 months

My littlest one, you are 3 months old today! It’s been a tiring 3 months for me. You need to be fed every 2 hours, even at night! Only very recently, you decided that you would sleep 4 hours at a stretch at night. Thank God for that. But your daytime sleeping has gotten worse! You take ages to fall asleep then wake up soon after. On certain days, I barely have time to do anything productive.

You sleep slightly better when we are on the go, so I use that as an excuse to gallivant everywhere with you in the baby carrier. But you only sleep if I’m walking around so you tend to fuss and cry when we’re on the bus. As a result, we get quite a few people offering unsolicited advice on how to stop your crying!

Even though you are only 3 months old, you have already been to Ho Chi Minh City and Taipei, and will be heading to Penang soon. You won’t remember anything about these trips but where I go, you go too. You’re basically glued to me until I return to work.

Your siblings adore you and want to plaster you with little kisses whenever they can. Your sister prefers you to her other brother, but I think it’s because you don’t fight with her over toys. Your brother seems to think you are some sort of adorable pet and doesn’t understand why I need to be taking care of you when he wants my attention.

You tend to look quite serious most of the time with your brows constantly knitted in concentration. But you have been a lot more smiley recently and you have the most adorable smile! My heart melts whenever you flash me a toothless grin and I forget how tired and frustrated I am. You are also very talkative and like to coo and gurgle and make random talking noises. I’m quite sure I heard you say ‘hello’ to a lady in the lift today and it freaked me out!

I only have 2.5 months before I return to work and I won’t be able to spend 24/7 with your awesome baby squishiness anymore. So for now, it’s just you and me most of the time and I really want to cherish the moments! Love you, my little sweetheart!

David’s First Overseas Trip – Ho Chi Minh City

Adrian had to go to Ho Chi Minh City for a trip with his colleagues so I tagged along too. We brought Baby D with us because he’s still nursing and Anya because it was her birthday weekend. Poor Adam was left with my parents. David was relatively ok for his first flight ever. He was restless and cried a few times but it was no worse than his usual behaviour. We spent most of our time in HCMC eating and also checked out a couple of tourist attractions, namely the post office, Notre Dame and Ben Thanh market.

I really wanted to go to the Cu Chi tunnels and we even booked a trip but decided that it just wasn’t worth a 2-hour car ride there and back with the kids. Ho Chi Minh City is not a very kid-friendly place. The traffic is terrible and the air is not great. While we were there, we got several concerned looks from the locals whenever they saw David. Back home, we only got nagged by old folks but in HCMC, even young people would stare and point! Turns out that in Vietnam, babies below 3 months of age (and their mothers) are not supposed to leave the house and David was just over 1.5 months then!
