Open House 2015 – Adam’s Faces

Adam’s class did their project work on faces! They made many different kinds of faces such as balloon faces stuffed with flour, animal faces made of clay, paper thaumatrope faces, silhouette printing, papier mache faces, and so many more! The whole class worked together to make a giant face and they also put up a performance and they sang two action songs

Part of the Open House involved raising money for charity. In Adam’s class, there were some paintings on display that were painted by the students and these paintings were up for auction. We were admiring them and remarking that some of the kids could paint so well. Then we discovered that one of the pictures (of a yellow cat in a blue shirt) was done by Adam! We were pleasantly surprised because we weren’t aware that he had any artistic inclination. I’m sure he had a lot of help from his teachers but we were very proud of his work (and of course we bid for his painting).

Getting Along Swimmingly with The Swimming Room (Plus a Giveaway!)

There are so many classes for children these days. You can pick from typical academic ones like Math, Chinese and Science, or sign your kid up for more exotic classes like circus arts, belly dancing, yoga or even mermaid school!

We are always keen to let the kids try new stuff if they are interested but the one enrichment class that is non-negotiable is swimming. The husband feels that water safety is the top priority and feels very strongly that the kids must know how to swim.

Anya started swimming with Eugene of The Swimming Room when she was 3 years old. At her first lesson, she kept crying and wanting me to get into the pool with her and she didn’t want to put her face in the water at all. Eugene was so patient with her, reassured her repeatedly and got her to go through all the activities. After a few lessons, she started looking forward to her weekly swimming class and it was hard to get her out of the pool after class! You can read more about Anya’s experiences with The Swimming Room here, here and here.

Of course, when it was Adam’s turn to start swimming, I immediately signed him up for classes with Eugene. Adam is not confident at all in the pool and would usually cling to me like a barnacle when we go swimming, so I thought I would have to wait a long time before he started to enjoy his swimming classes.

I was pleasantly surprised that he was keen to participate from the first lesson even though he was clearly nervous about being in the water. He’s so comfortable with Eugene and it’s clear that Adam trusts Eugene to take care of him in the pool. It’s been a few months since he started swimming and his water confidence level is so much higher than it used to be and he always looks forward to his swimming lessons.

leap of faith!

Back when I was trying to sign Anya up for swimming lessons, I was quite boggled by the number of options available and I had no way of knowing whether that particular swimming school or coach was good. Some of the swimming schools I tried contacting didn’t even bother getting back to me and it was all rather frustrating. So I’m really glad I managed to find Eugene and The Swimming Room!

Since the holidays are round the corner, you may be thinking of checking out some swim schools for your child but may not know where to start looking. Here’s your chance to cross that one item off your list!

Adam’s 1st Swimming Class!

Adam had his first swimming lesson with Teacher Eugene (Anya’s former swimming instructor) last week but it was a very short session because they got rained out. He seemed quite happy during class which is a stark contrast to Anya who cried (and sometimes vomited) every lesson for about a month before becoming resigned to her fate.

The sun was blazing hot for the second lesson a week later so they managed to do a lot more. Adam was clearly very stressed throughout the lesson but still followed instructions. They did some kicking, some floating, some blowing of bubbles and some swishing around in the water.

Happy 3rd Birthday, Adam!

Adam Turns 3

My dearest little boy, you are now 3 years old! You have been a middle child for 7 months but you don’t seem too affected by it. You are still your sweet and good-natured self and you are always loving towards your brother and to everyone else in the family. You are easy to love too and you dispense hugs and kisses readily. I love your kind heart and your cheeky sense of humour. Whenever you see me in a dress, you declare that my outfit is so nice and that I am ‘Princess Mummy of Arendelle’!

Lately, you have been throwing terrible tantrums and it’s impossible to reason with you and scolding you achieves nothing either. I know it’s a difficult age for you because you are thinking and feeling so much but not always able to express yourself as clearly as you would like. You are fond of asking me, “When I’m naughty, do you still love me?” and I always tell you that I love you all the time, no matter what.

It’s hard for you to be patient when you want something and get no for an answer because the notion of delayed gratification is not something you appreciate. You have a love-hate relationship with your sister as well. When I see the two of you playing so happily, I know that having more than one kid is the best decision ever. But when you fight with each other and scream at the top of your lungs, I just want to hide somewhere until the chaos is over!

I’m glad that you are enjoying school and that you have friends you like playing with. Chinese enrichment class for you is not the best use of my money, however, and you can barely remember anything you learn there!  And to think I actually tried speaking to you in Mandarin when you were a baby!

Going from 2 to 3 years old has been a big leap for you and you have grown so much, both physically and mentally, and reached so many milestones along the way. To be honest, the past year was quite a blur and I find myself wondering where my squishy, babbling little toddler has disappeared to!

I love you more than I can adequately put in words and it’s not just because you’re the only one of my three kids who looks like me! Your open and guileless nature touches my heart and I want to protect you and keep you safe. God bless you, my sweetheart. You have an exciting year ahead of you.

Adam at The Animal Resort

I accompanied Adam on his school excursion to The Animal Resort and it was really interesting to see a different side of Singapore. There are many small animals and birds found at The Animal Resort and there’s a horse as well. The kids were given a briefing on the different types of animals there and how to feed them before being set loose on the hapless creatures.

The animals there generally looked well cared for and they were clearly used to being surrounded by noisy little children. Adam was initially afraid to get too close to the animals to feed them and would fling the food at the animals instead of feeding it to them, but he eventually warmed up to the idea. It’s a pretty fun way for kids to spend a few hours but insect repellent is a must!

Tennis Trial Class for Adam

We signed Adam up for a tennis trial class for 2 to 4-year-old kids at The Tennis Club and he enjoyed it! There were two other children in his class and they all looked like they were having a good time. The class started with some warm-ups and the kids ran a couple of rounds around the indoor court and then jumped through hoops. The coach then got them to catch some balls with little nets before getting them to try hitting a few balls.

I like that the coach was patient but firm with the kids. She was very encouraging but didn’t let them get away with fooling around. So we’ve signed him up for classes and now Anya says she wants to go for a trial class! We’ll see how things go for her.

Adam’s Swell Weekend in Hospital

On Friday, Adam kept complaining that his leg hurt and my mum and I thought it was because his shoes were a bit too tight for him. But we noticed that he had some insect bites on his ankle and his ankle was a bit swollen. A few hours later, his foot and calf were also swollen! My mum took him to a GP who prescribed some lotion for the bites. By that evening, however, his entire leg below his knee had swelled up until the skin was tight to the touch. He didn’t have a fever but Adrian decided to take him to the hospital.

Adam is generally very sensitive: he has sensitive airways, sensitive skin and some food allergies. It seems he had an allergic reaction to the insect bites and the bites got infected. His scratching made it worse. The doctors said it was cellulitis and started him on antibiotics but warned they might have to get a surgeon to take a look at his leg if the swelling in the calf didn’t subside. The next day, his leg was still swollen and itchy but at least he didn’t complain about any pain. He was in good spirits throughout, ate well and tried to run around even though he wasn’t supposed to.

Thankfully, he responded well to the antibiotics and was discharged on Mother’s Day. I was really worried about my little boy and I’m so glad that he’s home and safe. Best Mother’s Day present ever!
