Disney on Ice Magical Ice Festival

We took the kids to Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival and they had such a good time! We got there a bit earlier so we could check out the merchandise and get some food from the concession stand. The candy floss sold with an Olaf hat was a hot favourite as was the huge popcorn bucket.

While the highlight for most of the kids in the audience was Frozen (clearly evident from the number of little girls in Elsa and Anna costumes), my favourite segment was The Little Mermaid. Ariel and Prince Eric were absolutely brilliant when executing the stunts on the ice and Ariel’s aerial acrobatics brought the performance up an extra notch.

David was mesmerised by Maximus the horse and the floating lanterns in Tangled and I was amazed by the fact that the rear end of the horse could skate so well. Kudos to Rapunzel for her graceful skating even with the heavy weight of her long long hair! The performance of Be Our Guest in Beauty & the Beast was a crowd-pleaser and the transformation of the Beast into a prince was nicely executed.

When Sven and Kristoff appeared on the ice, the crowd went wild. The energy level palpably increased and the kids (and the adults too) were happily singing along. Without a doubt, Elsa was the most popular character and her energetic skating to Let it Go was the ideal climax to a wonderful show. Frozen is simply perfect for Disney On Ice and should not be missed!

Old is Gold at Yasashii Trading

The sister and I spotted Yasashii Trading from a distance while out looking for food at Alexandra Village and I practically sprinted over to the shop in excitement. I love second-hand, retro, and nostalgic items and can spend hours browsing shops like Hock Siong & Co., Junkie’s Corner (Turf Club Rd) and The Heritage Shop (Jln Sultan).

Several items caught my eye while we were there and I eventually left with an enamel pot and some 锻炼身体 ping pong bowls and spoon.I like that there are price tags on the items so you don’t have to worry about the people charging you based on what they think you’re willing to pay. You also get a slight discount if you buy a few items.

We were in a bit of a rush that day so I couldn’t browse at leisure. Need to make another trip there soon and then hop on over to the food centre for their awesome avocado drink.

Cirque Eloize iD

The circus is in town! Last Friday, I took Adam to Marina Bay Sands to catch Cirque Eloize iD and we had such a good time.It was so awesome to see his face light up  with excitement with every act. He kept turning to me and saying Wow! and it was obvious that he enjoyed himself very much.

Adam was particularly impressed by the opening act of the very strong man who was able to lift and throw a woman with the greatest of ease and even balance her on the top of his head! He kept wanting me to try balancing him on my head during the interval.

He couldn’t tear his eyes away from the act in which one of the performers climbed up several chairs that were balancing on each other. He whispered that he was scared (so was I!) that the man was going to fall and was so relieved when the act was a great success. The bicycle stunt involving a member of the audience also had him on the edge of his seat.

I loved how the creative projections brought the set to life and transformed the stage from an urban setting of tall buildings to a busy construction site and many other eye-popping futuristic images. I was fascinated by the flexibility of the contortionist and when I thought she couldn’t possibly bend any further, she proved me wrong and blew my mind!

My favourite bits were the aerial acts of the hoop and silks and I was awed by the strength and agility of the performers. The energetic dancers that tied the acts together also made this circus act unlike any others I have seen.

Disney On Ice Magical Ice Festival Giveaway!

We are huge Disney fans here in the Wee household and we can’t wait to catch Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival at Singapore Indoor Stadium during the March school holidays from 11 Mar to 20 Mar. Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival will feature magical moments all the way from the wintery world of Frozen to the watery wonderland of The Little Mermaid. The spectacular show will also include Rapunzel and Flynn from Tangled and the enchanted setting of Beauty and the Beast!

The kids are really looking forward to see their favourite princesses in action and I bet they will be frozen to their seats (haha…) when Elsa and Anna take the stage. Personally, I love to see the mascots like Mickey Mouse and gang on skates! They look so ungainly in their costumes but can somehow glide across the ice so gracefully and are simply mesmerising to watch.

Floral Watercolour Workshop

It’s been incredibly hard to keep up with blogging this year because things at work and at home have gotten so crazy I can barely breathe. But I have an obsession with learning new things and so I managed to make some time (with help from the husband and one of my aunts) and signed up for a floral watercolour workshop. I dragged the sister along with me for company and it turned out to be a really enjoyable session.

I think technology has taken over our lives so much that there is an increasing desire to DIY and get your hands dirty. There are so many crafty workshops available these days but I decided on Natalie Studio for the watercolour class because the location was very convenient for me.

Natalie’s samples

We paid $95 (the price has since gone up to $120) for a 3-hour class and there were 7 students in our class (but I think it’s supposed to be 8 cos there was one extra setting). There were a few sheets of floral samples on the table and Natalie our instructor demonstrated each type of flower with helpful tips on what to look out for and common errors.

After each demonstration we attempted the flower on our own while she went around and guided us and pointed out what we were doing wrong (too little water, too much force, etc.) When we were done with the different flowers, she showed us samples of floral wreaths, taught us how to plan the shape and layout, then we painted the wreath with her guidance.

I’m glad my first learn-something-new class for 2016 went so well. I would like to try brush calligraphy, some kind of sewing workshop, and maybe work with leather or metal as well!

Hello, Gruffalo!

It seemed like just another ordinary Saturday morning but the kids were actually in for a treat! The Gruffalo dropped by and paid us a visit to the delight of the older children (and the horror of the younger ones).

The kids adore the Gruffalo (terrible tusks and all) and love to read about him, watch him on DVD, and see him in action on the stage. So when the Gruffalo himself appeared at their grandfather’s doorstep with his knobbly knees and turned out toes, they were beside themselves with excitement!

The babies were a bit frightened of this creature with orange eyes and purple prickles, but when it was time for him to go, they decided to put aside their fear and gave him high fives and hugs. The older ones couldn’t bear to see him go and followed him all the way to the lift.

Bye bye, Gruffalo! Please come back again!

You can still catch The Gruffalo and the other forest creatures from the story at SOTA Drama Theatre tomorrow at 10 am, 12 pm and 3 pm. The Gruffalo is one of 6 productions being performed over 4 weeks (from now until 14 Feb) for Kidsfest 2016 and it’s extremely entertaining for the whole family!

Also check out the other Kidsfest 2016 shows – Room on the Broom, I Believe in Unicorns, Snow Child, Little Red Riding Hood, and Aliens Love Underpants – because tickets are selling fast!

A Smashing Time with The Tennis Club

It’s the end of the first week of 2016 and if your new year’s resolutions are already starting to look a bit out of reach, consider taking up a new sport!

I wanted to be a bit more active because being out of shape and sluggish all the time is not fun at all, so I started a term of tennis lessons at The Tennis Club with my sister. The husband has been playing tennis at The Tennis Club for a couple of years now and enjoys his sessions tremendously.

To be honest, I was quite nervous about the whole thing because I have zero stamina, I’m not the sporty kind AT ALL, and my hand-eye coordination leaves much to be desired. So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that tennis is actually a lot of fun, even for someone who doesn’t like physical activity!

learning to serve

In the first few lessons, the focus was mainly on getting us familiar with the basics of forehand, backhand, serves, etc. with some drills and exercises. In the subsequent lessons, while still practicing the basics, my sister and I would also try to keep the ball in play up until the point our coach had to step in and rescue us.

Our coach Stephen Pellow has the patience of a saint (and a sense of humour) so the sessions are never tedious or stressful. I like how he constantly gives us little tips and reminders of what to look out for and switches things up if he sees that something is not working out too well for us.

After that first term of lessons, my sister and I decided to sign up for another term because the tennis lessons at The Tennis Club are truly something we look forward to every week. So whether your resolution is to lose weight/ keep fit/ try something new, consider taking that first step with some tennis lessons!
