Starlight Express at Marina Bay Sands

Anya caught her very first Broadway & West End musical last night. We watched Starlight Express at Marina Bay Sands and she had such a good time. Starlight Express is a rock musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and he originally wrote it for his children, which is why the show is thoroughly kid-friendly and so much fun for the little ones.

Starlight Express is a feel-good story about a group of toy railway trains racing to be the fastest engine in the world. It’s Thomas & Friends meets Cinderella and the underdog ultimately triumphs and finds true love. The entire performance takes place on roller skates which was a bonus for us since Anya is currently taking inline skating lessons so she was suitably impressed by how the actors were zooming all around the stage and dancing on their skates.

The races in the show are pre-recorded and projected in 3D onto a screen. Anya loved the race scenes and kept asking if it was time to put on her ‘safety goggles’ (the 3D glasses) and would command us to put on our ‘safety goggles’ at the right moment. She was very interested in the different eye-catching costumes worn by the various trains and the catchy songs had her dancing and clapping in her seat.

I’m so glad we got to watch this together with Anya and that she enjoyed it as much as she did! At 2 hours and 11 minutes (including a 20-minute interval), the musical is the longest performance that she has ever sat through and she enjoyed every moment of it. Starlight Express is highly entertaining, visually stunning and definitely worth watching.

Starlight Express is on until this Sunday, 24 November, with tickets starting from $65. This is an energetic show that everyone in the family will enjoy and a great introduction to Broadway/ West End for the kids. Catch it while you can!

Disclaimer: We received three complimentary tickets to watch this performance. All opinions are my own.
