Gardens by the Bay Tulipmania 2014

After planting tulips at Gardens by the Bay two weeks ago, we visited the Flower Dome again to check out the tulips in bloom! It was a beautiful sight indeed and the kids were amazed by the different types of tulips in such a range of stunning colours. I wish my photos could do the tulips justice but you really need to see them in person to fully appreciate the flowers!

Tulipmania is at Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay until 4 May. The display is hugely popular so you should consider buying your tickets online, especially if you plan to go during the weekend! Miffy will be at Gardens by the Bay again on 26 April at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM for the Tulip Cheer Orange Day Celebrations.

Miffy & Tulipmania at Gardens by the Bay

Tulipmania is back! Visitors to Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay from 14 April – 4 May will be able to see a display featuring Dutch canal scenes, houses and windmills set in the midst of 50,000 gorgeous tulips. The tulip bulbs are flown in from The Netherlands and are in red, yellow, orange, purple and white. To make things even more magical, for the first time in conjunction with Tulipmania, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will be flying in Miffy, the beloved Dutch rabbit!

We were invited to plant tulip bulbs with Miffy in preparation for Tulipmania. Sengkang Babies and Cheekiemonkies were there too! It was hard work loosening up the compost and transferring it to the trough before planting the tulip bulbs. Anya enjoyed the process and was happy to use her hands to pat the compost into place around the base of the tulip bulbs. She did her very best to handle the tulip bulbs with tender loving care and to ensure that they were straight and spaced out nicely.

After planting the tulip bulbs, we went outside to wait for Miffy’s arrival. I must confess that I think Miffy is adorable and I was really looking forward to seeing her. When she appeared, I gave a rather undignified squeal of excitement! Anya was so delighted to see Miffy that she kept following her around and even hid behind Miffy when the other visitors were taking photos with the bunny.

I can’t wait to see the tulips in bloom and I’m definitely making my way down to Gardens by the Bay next week for Tulipmania! Miffy will be at Gardens by the Bay again on 20 April for an Easter egg hunt and 26 April for the Tulip Cheer Orange Day Celebrations. Registration will be done in Flower Dome. Admission charges to the Cooled Conservatories apply.

FEO Children’s Garden at Gardens by the Bay

We were invited to the preview of the Far East Organisation Children’s Garden at Gardens by the Bay, but it was during my confinement so we didn’t go. Finally managed to take the kids there with their cousins during the March holidays. It’s an amazing place with so many things for kids of all ages to do! It was really crowded that particular day with a few school groups there but the kids still enjoyed themselves tremendously. Hope to go back again when it’s not that packed!

FEO Children’s Garden at Gardens by the Bay is open from 9am to 9pm daily. It is closed for maintenance every Monday (or the next working day if Monday is a public holiday). Admission is free.

Kids at the Gardens: Feed Me!

There are lots of exciting programmes for families and kids at Gardens by the Bay during the March holidays and Anya had a preview of one of the programmes last Saturday. She learnt about carnivorous plants in Feed Me! and made one from recycled materials to take home with her.

Feed Me! is suitable for kids 4-6 years old. Before a tour of the conservatories, the kids learnt about the various things that plants need to survive, then they discovered how different plants thrive in different ways. The kids were fascinated by the carnivorous plants, especially the Venus flytrap, and the craft activity after the tour ensured that they each had a Venus flytrap souvenir to catch ‘insects’ with.

Some of the other programmes include learning about how plants reproduce, what the creatures in the soil do and the ecosystem at the Kingfisher Lake. There are also fun activities for the family. I’m keen to sign Anya up for Stories in the Understorey, another programme suitable for kids 4-6 years old. Mid-Autumn Festival at the Gardens

I was very excited to hear that the corpse flower hybrid at Gardens by the Bay had bloomed, so I rushed down to take a look at the flowering Amorphophallus ‘John Tan’. I was hoping to catch a whiff of the foul smell that corpse flowers are named for, but in the openness of the Cloud Forest conservatory, no odour could be detected.

By the time I visited Amorphophallus ‘John Tan’, it had already been flowering for about 48 hours and the flower is estimated to last for about only 2-3 days. So glad I got to see it before it collapsed. The next time there’s a flowering, I plan to get there as soon as I can to see the flower at its best.

I brought the kids and my aunt along to look at the Mid-Autumn floral display at the Flower Dome and the lantern display on the grounds of the Gardens. We didn’t manage to see all the lanterns because Anya was quite tired from the walking around and wanted to go home but Adam really enjoyed himself. She was very happy to be able to release a loi krathong flower float though.

The Mid-Autumn floral display will be up until 6 Oct but tomorrow’s the last day to enjoy 15% off normal admission rates to the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. Opening hours are extended to 11pm until tomorrow.

Flight of Fancy at Gardens by the Bay

We were invited to view the Flight of Fancy floral display at Gardens by the Bay and it was the first time there for the kids and they were so excited! Anya declared that since we were going to the gardens, she wanted to wear her dress with the print of potted plants and her brother had to wear his matching shirt.

Once we entered the Cloud Forest, the kids were awed by the 30-metre high waterfall and stood there enjoying the mist from the falls. They loved the colourful display of whimsical hot air balloons and kites and ran around excitedly pointing out the different things they spotted. I had a good time reading the fun facts that were placed around.

The kids were initially a bit hesitant to step on the walkways because they could see all the way through parts of it but soon they were happily skipping along admiring the different plants around them. Anya was very interested in the pitcher plants and Adam loved the bright flowers we saw along the way. I was happy to see the display of seeds dispersed by wind because Anya likes to pick up the winged Angsana seeds that are scattered all around the path we take to one of her classes.

After expending all his energy in his excitement at the Cloud Forest, Adam retreated to the stroller for our walk around the Flower Dome. Anya was so psyched to see baobab trees that we have read about in books and she was very amused by cacti that have been featured in the Roadrunner cartoons she’s watched. She insisted on taking photographs with all the different displays in the Flower Dome.

The kids had a great time on their first visit to Gardens by the Bay and the Flight of Fancy floral display really added to their enjoyment of the place! I’m glad they like the gardens as much as I do! Anya gave it her stamp of approval by making us promise that we would take her to the gardens again very soon. Flight of Fancy is on at Gardens by the Bay until Sunday, 21 July 2013. Check it out this weekend!

Gardens by the Bay

Adrian and I went on a date at Gardens by the Bay to celebrate our ten years as a couple. It was the first time there for both of us and we wanted to check it out before bringing the kids there.

I was really looking forward to seeing the conservatories because I’d visited the prototype greenhouses at HortPark two years ago and was quite amazed by the different types of plants growing there.

We went into Cloud Forest first and was greeted by the 35-metre tall waterfall. Very impressive! I loved the pitcher plants, orchids and the Cloud Walk but didn’t care very much for the display of stalactites and stalagmites in the Crystal Mountain section.

I liked that there was a section about the self-sustainability of Gardens by the Bay. It was interesting to learn that the energy used to cool the air in both conservatories comes from a biomass furnace that burns plant matter obtained from Singapore’s parks and gardens.

Then we headed to Flower Dome and went crazy over the different types of cacti. I think Anya will like the section with the baobabs and bottle trees. I was fascinated by the plants there and was very tempted to touch many of them.

Was also quite amazed by the size of some of the flowers and took some photos using Adrian’s face for scale.

After a quick bite at Verandah, we had some ice-cream from Seventh Heaven. My lavender ice-cream was quite lovely.

We couldn’t spend as much time as we would have liked to at Gardens by the Bay because we wanted to go back to my mum’s place and see the kids, so our final stop was the OCBC Skyway at the Supertree Grove.

I’m not scared of heights and am generally quite keen on roller-coasters and such but I definitely felt a little nervous on the Skyway! I think it’s because I could see all the way down to the ground and the Skyway was also swaying slightly in the wind. Don’t think Anya would like it very much.

We had a very nice date and we’ll be back again soon with the little ones. There’s still quite a lot of the Gardens that we didn’t manage to see!
