Grow Old A10ng With Me!

Adrian and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary on Thursday and what an amazing decade it has been! I wanted to get him a really special gift and when I bumped into Frus at Public Garden several months ago, I knew I had found the perfect present for him.

Frus (say froo-se) was founded by Ben and Joanne and they design the cutest cards, stickers, and totes with whimsical local designs. The ABCs according to Frus is Ang Ku Kueh, Bak Zhang and Chicken Rice and learning the alphabet with their A-Z Local Food Print is probably the yummiest way to do so. Besides their illustrated cards and bags, they also design custom prints for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and any other occasion you can think of.

I contacted them sometime in August (they need a lead time of about 2 months) and chatted with Joanne about what I had in mind. She sent me a list of questions about our relationship and asked me for photos of Adrian and me taken during our courtship, wedding, etc. and photos of the kids as well. She emailed me the first draft soon after and I asked for some edits and after going through that process a few times, this is the final product:

the final product!

As expected, Adrian loves his 10th anniversary gift and I’m just incredibly wowed by how she turned the information and photos that I provided into something so special to us. By the way, I came up with the Grow Old A10ng With Me tagline that incorporates the number 10 so if you find it cheesy, I accept complete responsibility!

You can find Frus on Naiise and they also accept orders through their Facebook page and email (). The full list of items available is on their Facebook page so check them out and ‘Like’ them. They will be appearing at the Public Garden Christmas Flea on 21, 22, 28 & 29 November at F1 Pit Building. Do drop by and support Frus because they are such a lovely local business!

David’s Birth Story told by Daddy

I wrote a birth story for each child after every birth so for this Birth Stories blog train, I’ve invited the husband to tell the story of David’s birth from his side of things. For the record, my greatest achievement for this birth was remembering to put on some tinted lip balm before the delivery. You can read the birth stories for Anya, Adam and David at the respective links if you’re interested.

You arrived in a whirlwind of chaos. I don’t remember much of the pregnancy. Bear in mind that, at this time, your sister and brother were 4 and 2 respectively and always up to no good. I do remember that they were very excited about their new brother, and asked almost every day when you would get here.

I also remember that we had a scare early on when one of your tests came back slightly dodgy- there was a higher-than-normal chance that you would have Down’s, or worse. Things were difficult for a while as your mum and I did a lot of praying and planning for the worst. Fortunately, further tests assured us that you were ok (save that there is no test for extreme naughtiness).

The birth was over before we knew it. Like old pros, we made sure to have a nice dinner before we checked into the hospital. I think this time I actually managed to get some sleep that night. They came early in the morning to wheel your mum away [editor’s note: he makes me sound like a dim sum cart!] and I was off to wait in the Dad’s waiting room. Sitting there with other nervous family members, it felt familiar, and I was reminded of the many sleepless nights that were to follow, as well as the countless moments of joy that I was sure to have with you as you grew up.

The doc paged for me, and I went to put on my scrubs. No explanation was needed (old pro, remember?) and, before long, I was in the operating theatre. You came out just like your siblings – bad tempered, covered in gunk and generally gross. You were a lightweight, not much bigger than a guinea pig, but screamed like a 2 ton banshee.

I left you to the nurses and went upstairs to wait for Mum. That was where the drama started. An hour stretched into 2, and then 3. It was close to noon before the doctor called me to tell me there had been some complications but that it had all been resolved. Apparently, they couldn’t stop the bleeding and your mum had to be put under general anaesthetic for more comprehensive repair work [editor’s note: now I sound like a broken-down car]. The last thing she heard was the doctor saying “cancel all my appointments!”. Mum is sure to remind you all about how she almost died giving birth to you, every time you are naughty.

Watching your sister and brother meet you for the first time was priceless. They were so excited to meet you, and haven’t stopped being crazy about you since. We weren’t expecting you to come into our lives, but now that you are here, we can’t imagine life without you.

Less Stress with AXA Family Advantage

Pregnancy is a time of wonder: you wonder if baby is growing well, wonder if you’re eating the right things, wonder if you’re eating enough (or a little too much), wonder if the baby is a boy or a girl, wonder if you’ve managed to buy everything you need for the baby, and wonder how your life is going to change completely once baby gets here! This entertaining AXA Family Advantage video reminds me of that exciting but stressful time.

When I was pregnant with Anya, I worried a lot because we had a bit of a scare early in the pregnancy, and again towards the end of the pregnancy when her weight gain was less than ideal. And since there were a few hiccups during the pregnancy, it meant that we had to see our OBGYN quite often and that added significantly to our expenses. I also needed a C-section so we ended up spending more than we expected. Looking at Anya now, it’s hard to imagine she was such a tiny baby!

Our SG50 Jubilee Weekend

Happy birthday, Singapore!

Happy birthday, Singapore!

We kept ourselves rather busy over the National Day weekend! On Friday, we headed to Gardens by the Bay East to catch the RSAF Black Knights in action. We didn’t have a very good view there and also got soaked in the rain! In hindsight, we weren’t very prepared for this little outing.

On Sunday, we tried again but this time we made reservations at Stewords Riverboat and had a fantastic view of the Black Knights before heading inside for lunch. It’s so amazing how the planes seemed to fly so close to us!

In the evening, Anya went to the Floating Platform with our friends who had an extra ticket while Adrian, Adam and I slummed it near the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre. We didn’t have a great view of the screen or the sky or the fireworks but we had access to proper toilets and to decent food! The three of us had a blast soaking in the atmosphere with the crowds.

Care for your Car with EuroAuto Lounge

Unless you rule the car with the iron fist of Stalin, chances are, at some point, the kids have eaten in your car. More likely than not, things eaten in the car have also, at some point, ‘re-emerged’ in the car. Those mats you put in to trap dirt and dust? They have, unfortunately, done their job too well, foiling your half-hearted attempts to vacuum and clean them.

the sad state of our car

the sad state of our car

All this can lead to some pretty nasty things happening to your car. Apart from the general accumulation of dirt and grime, cars can be the perfect home for roaches and other creepy crawlies. Worse still, the air-conditioning system can harbour all kinds of fungus and bacteria that your kids will end up breathing in.

what's that squashed there??

what’s that squashed there??

Our car sees some serious (child) abuse, so the good people at EuroAuto Lounge stepped in to help. EuroAuto Lounge offers a full Interior Sanitisation & Anti-Pest Fumigation service, which is designed not only to thoroughly clean your car, but to ensure that all pests, large and microscopic, are eradicated.

The process involved bagging all items left in the car (you are encouraged to remove as many items as you can from the car ahead of time) and then fogging the car. This was followed by a thorough cleaning and check for pests and cocoons. This is extremely labour and time intensive, but the guys didn’t miss a spot. We found 3 cockroaches, which I have named after the children.

look what they found in the car!

look what they found in the car!

They next vacuumed the car and proceed to give every surface a good clean. EuroAuto Lounge uses only reputable products from suppliers such as KochChemie and Promed, and the cleaning worked wonders.

The final step in the process involved running the air conditioning system at full blast while they carried out ozonic sanitisation. The car smelt completely different- not the scent of air fresheners masking odours, but the actual absence of odours altogether!

The entire process takes the whole day, and since there is fair amount of waiting for the fogging to settle down, why not have your car polished and groomed as well? We did just that, and at the end of the day, the car was clean, sparkly and healthy inside and out.

looks like new!

EuroAuto Lounge recommends that the cleaning be done 3-monthly, and after experiencing the vast difference before and after, I can’t wait for the next session.

Small Spaces – A Room for Wee Ones

Anya and Adam have been sharing a room since Adam started pre-nursery. Their room is quite tiny so instead of two single beds, we have children beds from Ikea instead. We were considering a bunk bed but Adam is very accident-prone and we’re saving that idea for when the kids are slightly older. Most of their toys are in the living room and their books on the bookshelves in the study so you don’t see much of a mess in their room because it’s been transferred outside!

My favourite part of the room is the map wallpaper. I decided to get it after seeing how gorgeous it looks on Mum in the Making. The room always seems so bright and happy and doesn’t require much in terms of decorating. In case anyone is wondering, the globes are from Typo, the poop emoji is from Qoo10, and I got the VeggieTales plush toys from Amazon.

The kids also have a chalkboard wall in their room which takes up one entire wall. We use it for anything from spelling to math to drawing silly things. There’s also a small bookshelf in one corner of the room with some of the kids’ artwork above it. The bookshelf holds some favourite books as well as books that the kids are currently keen on. We have a whole bunch of Leo Lionni books in there at the moment. We bought the bookshelf for less than $40 off Qoo10.

So that’s it for their small space! What you don’t see is the wardrobe and the rest of the chalkboard wall. I’m just happy there is at least one room in the house that’s not a gigantic mess. Of course, it is a work in progress and I’m constantly moving things around, sticking things up, takings things down. We are planning to move Anya to her own room when the baby starts going to pre-nursery and then the two boys can share this room instead.

Next up on the Small Spaces blog train is Michelle who blogs at Mummy Wee. Michelle is a mum to 6 kids aged between 2 and 16. The 4 older girls share 2 rooms while the boy has a room to himself. He generously shares his room with his baby sister Kate whom he dotes on.

An Interview with Children’s Book Writer David Seow

When I first came across the Sam, Sebbie & Di-Di-Di series of children’s books written by author David Seow, I was instantly drawn to them because they are about the adventures of a little girl and her two younger brothers and the beautifully-illustrated book covers reminded me so much of Anya, Adam and David. The books are published by Epigram Books and illustrated by Soefara Jafney and I will be reviewing all the books in the series.

I really wanted to begin my series of book reviews with an interview with the author and he was kind enough to answer some questions I had for him. David Seow is a well-known children’s book writer and a staple on the Singapore literary scene. He is an award-nominated children’s book author of over 20 children’s books, including the Sam, Sebbie and Di-Di-Di series, Alexander’s Adventure Machine, and The Littlest Emperor. His latest books are There’s Soup on My Fly!Blow A KissIf I Were a Blue Kangaroo, and Emma’s Elephant.

Sam, Sebbie & Di-Di-Di

Sam, Sebbie & Di-Di-Di

Q: What inspired you to write your first book?

A: My niece and nephews Sam, Sebbie and Jeremy (Di-Di-Di) inspired me to start writing the books. I used to babysit them every weekend and I had to read to them at bedtime. Each of them wanted me to read a stack of picture books to them and so to make things simple, I started coming up with stories about them which they seemed to like.

Q: How much of the book is realistic?

A: The stories were first published in 1998 when the children were toddlers. My youngest nephew, Xandy was born after I started writing. The books that are currently available are re-illusrated and edited versions of the books. There were things that I wasn’t happy about with the original series and I was happy that Epigram Books approached me about revamping the series. I think Epigram Books has done an amazing job with the series. They’ve paired me up with an amazing editor and a fantastic illustrator. I love working with them but they may not feel the same way. I can be hard work! LOL.

Q: What are your current projects? Can you share a little of your current work with us?

A: I have just finished a big commissioned project and I’m working on the sequel to my book A Day with the Duchess which is about Sam, Sebbie, Di-Di-Di and Xandy visiting the royals in London.

Q: Who is your favourite children’s author and what is it that you like about his/ her work?

A: I don’t have one particular favourite author. I like Naomi Kojima, Susanna Goho-Quek, Norm Jorgensen, Chris Cheng, Sarah Mousey, Sheri Tan, AJ Low,  Emily Lim, James Foley and Mo Willems. Each of them have very strong voices in their stories which resonate with children and adults alike. They have a sense of fun and that’s what every children’s book should have. That’s the most important part of a children’s book.

Q: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

A: Thanks for reading my books. I hope you like them. Please buy more!! :)

Disclaimer: We received the books from Epigram Books for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
