Absolute Fun with Absolute Fencing

We had a trial session with Absolute Fencing a few weekends ago and it was lots of fun for the whole family. I’ve always wanted to try fencing and was probably more excited about our trial class than the kids! I told them it’s what we see Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy doing in The Three Musketeers and that piqued their interest.

We learnt about the weapons used in fencing and practised some fencing positions and movements. Adam’s definitely too young and was fooling around the entire time but he enjoyed making beep beep noises with his weapon. It was really cute watching the two of them trying to fence though! Anya took it a lot more seriously and was able to follow the instructions. After our session was over, she said she really liked it.

Adrian and I had a go as well and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Of course, I had absolutely no strategy aside from rushing madly towards my opponent so I lost. All the lunging was quite tiring and I’m sure fencers all have very nice perky butts. It was a great workout and I’m seriously thinking about signing up for classes for myself and Anya. The location is very convenient for us so that’s a bonus!

Anya in her Tennis Class

Since Adam has taken up tennis, Anya decided that she wants to play too! So we signed her up for a 4-6 years old class at The Tennis Club. There are more kids in her class but they have 2 instructors and the instructors are more strict with the group than the one for the 2-4 years old. I think she really likes her white tennis dress and having her own little racquet.

Tennis Trial Class for Adam

We signed Adam up for a tennis trial class for 2 to 4-year-old kids at The Tennis Club and he enjoyed it! There were two other children in his class and they all looked like they were having a good time. The class started with some warm-ups and the kids ran a couple of rounds around the indoor court and then jumped through hoops. The coach then got them to catch some balls with little nets before getting them to try hitting a few balls.

I like that the coach was patient but firm with the kids. She was very encouraging but didn’t let them get away with fooling around. So we’ve signed him up for classes and now Anya says she wants to go for a trial class! We’ll see how things go for her.

Trapeze Level 1

One of my new year’s resolutions was to get back into Circus Arts and I’m rather chuffed to say I managed to keep that resolution! Still working on the other 3 resolutions though. I’ve been attending Trapeze Level 1 at Simply Yoga and it’s so much fun! I have to bring David along to class with me because I’m still nursing every 2 hours, but thankfully the other students in the class are all mothers so they are willing to put up with his crying and even help me to carry him. I am incredibly grateful to them, especially my cousin-in-law who gives me a lift there every week!

I hadn’t done circus in almost a year before starting on the trapeze class and I’m still terribly out of shape and definitely the worst in the class. I really need to lose weight and build strength! But I’m quite proud of myself for signing up and making it through each class. We recently had our graduation class and we all dressed up for it. Should have some interesting photos to share soon! I’m going to start on Silks Level 1 next week so I’m looking forward to it.

Birthday Party at Amped Katong

We attended Anya’s friend’s birthday party at Amped a couple of weeks ago and it was SO MUCH FUN! And I’m not just talking about the kids having a good time; I had such a blast jumping up and down that I told the husband that we need to go back without the kids and jump to our hearts’ content! We are planning to visit the one at Jurong soon. Kids optional!

Rock Climbing 101 with Kinectics Climbing

We signed Anya and some of her friends and their siblings up for a session of Climbing 101 with Kinetics Climbing. We had three young instructors for our group of 15 kids and the instructors were very patient and guided the kids well. Some of the kids were very enthusiastic and climbed several times happily. Some of the other kids had to overcome their fears and hesitations but made it in the end. It was a great learning experience for all of them.

However, I feel that the admin side could have been a lot smoother. I emailed Kinetics Climbing to ask about Climbing 101 and then gave them a call after not getting a reply. On the phone, I spoke to a lady who didn’t know anything and she kept having to ask somebody else in the background and I eventually asked to speak to that person instead. For example, I asked about maximum number and was told that 6 is the minimum (that didn’t answer my question) and then she told me that there’s no maximum. I find that hard to believe since the 15 kids we had was quite a crowd!

When I managed to get hold of the man in the background, he seemed quite reluctant to speak to me and kept saying that they would have replied my email if I had sent it to the correct email address (I did) and asked me to check my spam folder (there was no reply from them). I managed to keep him on the phone long enough to get a suggested maximum number of about 15-20 kids and a promise that he would get someone to reply my email.

After a couple of emails and phone calls, a time and date was secured and I transferred the deposit amount. Then they emailed and called a few times to say I didn’t transfer the right amount (I did) and that I had to make up the shortfall for them to proceed. Eventually, it turned out to be a problem on their side of things and someone called to apologise for the mix-up. But I really didn’t appreciate the accusatory tone I was subjected to. They should have checked very thoroughly on their side before calling/ emailing and insinuating that the customer is trying to withhold correct payment.

Finally, we were asked to turn up 10 minutes before our session and so we did but were dealt with rather impatiently when we got there. We were repeatedly told that they only start at 10am, told to wait and stand at the side, told not to touch anything, etc. It was not very pleasant.

To sum up, I find no fault with the instructors and the equipment (although they should have some pairs of smaller climbing shoes if they want to cater to 4-year-old children), but I think they really need to do better in their administration. While I’m not saying we will never go back to Kinetics Climbing, we will probably check out the other climbing schools like The Rock School or Onsight Climbing if we want the kids to attempt rock climbing again!

Ice-Skating at The Rink

The first and only time we took Anya ice-skating was in June last year. Back then, the smallest skates at The Rink were too big for her and they didn’t have the penguin skating aid yet, so she was basically just slipping and sliding all over the place. But she’s been learning inline-skating and when Adrian took her skating last Saturday, she was much better and also a lot more confident with the skating aid to help her!
