Brawn & Brains at Guillemard Rd

We had a workshop to attend at Guillemard Rd the previous Saturday so we popped into Brawn & Brains at the old Singapore Badminton Hall for a bite. It’s a tiny little place in some random corner but was quite crowded when we got there just after opening time.

There are a few things about Brawn & Brains that I’m not particularly fond of: there are no highchairs for kids, orders have to be placed at the counter, the menu is very limited, hot items are only available an hour after it opens, we had to share a table, it’s SO small, etc.

Yet I can’t help but be charmed by this little cafe. It’s unpretentious and cozy, the people are sincere, and the few things they have on the menu are nicely done. We had superb coffee and light, fluffy croissants that morning.

Group Therapy at Katong V

I’ve been attending trapeze classes at Simply Yoga in Katong V so Adrian and the kids came along with me the other day when it was a public holiday. We ate at Group Therapy before my class and I think it was the first time we had brunch with all three kids!

David was nursing and dozing but not making any fuss so I could eat the entire meal in peace, which is very rare. Anya and Adam fed themselves and ate heartily because the food was good. A very peaceful meal! I could even take photos of the food (excuse the crap quality; they were taken with my phone in low light) and the kids.

Arbite at Serangoon Gardens

Adrian had to go to the club last weekend so we decided to explore our dining options in the North. We decided on Arbite at Serangoon Gardens but almost changed our mind about going because parking was a nightmare! Just as we were thinking of leaving the area and heading elsewhere, we managed to get a lot.

Arbite wasn’t very packed when we got there but there were quite a few tables with ‘Reserved’ signs and the place started filling up while we were eating. There were 3 or 4 servers working but I think most of them must be new because they looked somewhat clueless and kept having to check with the supervisor whenever they weren’t sure about something. For example, the table next to us asked for black pepper and the server went to ask the supervisor where it was even though it was in plain sight with the other condiments.

The food was good though. Adrian ordered his usual breakfast platter and it came with scrambled eggs, bacon, baked beans, grilled tomato, smoked chili & chicken sausage, mushrooms, brioche and pommes noisettes. He was very pleased with it and ranked it in the top 5 of all the breakfast platters he’s had. The coffee was only so-so.

I had the Duck & Eggs, which was poached eggs, duck rillette, Hollandaise sauce, jalapenos, cheese, muffin and greens. It was nice, but I was hoping for a stronger jalapeno flavour to come through. I could only taste jalapeno in one particular bite that I took.

I decided to have My Wife’s Chocolate Cake for dessert but it was such a disappointment. It looked good but was too dry. Maybe things would have gone better with the Gula Melaka Tiramisu or the Chocolate Yuzu Fondant!

Stirling Highway at Ridgewood Condominium

I’ve been meaning to visit Stirling Highway for some time and finally got around to it on Saturday. We only had the baby with us because the kids were busy meeting and greeting the Prime Minister over at the Clementi Arts & Culture Festival so it was a chill brunch.

I have a thing for sweet-salty combinations so I ordered the pulled pork buttermilk pancakes with Jack Daniel’s-infused maple syrup. It was really good and I wolfed down everything! The pancakes were fluffy and the pulled pork was melt-in-the-mouth tender. I also had the mocha and it was very chocolatey and comforting.

Adrian had the breakfast platter with Portobello mushroom, two eggs of your choice, sausage, bacon and bread. It was quite decent and he particularly liked the garlicky mushrooms. I appreciated the generous serving of greens and tomatoes in the platter.

Stirling Highway is at a convenient location for us so we’ll probably be back to try their lunch and dinner offerings and the desserts!

La Ristrettos at Novena Medical Centre

After Anya was done with Doctor for a Day, we popped over to Novena Medical Centre across the road and had brunch at La Ristrettos. I’ve heard a lot of buzz about the place, mainly because it’s in such a unexpected location. The service could have been better and the drinks took a relatively long time to come, but it’s a nice, quiet place to hang out.

The coffee and food was very decent too. I was pleasantly surprised by the chocolate ice-cream in my iced mocha. I ordered Tostino E Arrosto in a blur and didn’t realise it came with roast chicken breast (which I don’t like at all!) but the chicken was very tender and flavourful so it was okay.

The Marshmallow Tree

The following review originally appeared on Brunch with my Baby on 1 December. It’s a great site if you are constantly on the lookout for kid-friendly places to eat and play at!

The Marshmallow Tree

The Marshmallow Tree is a little café in the quiet housing estate of Telok Blangah, just a short distance away from the hustle and bustle Vivocity and Harbourfront.

The Marshmallow Tree is a whimsical place: a swing in one corner, cozy mismatched chairs, a chalkboard wall, street lamps, a ceiling painted like the sky and a huge Domokun plush. Anya made a beeline for the brown creature and harassed it (him?) for a bit before settling down to draw at the chalkboard wall.

We weren’t particularly hungry so we ordered a chicken pie and a domo cup. There’s no real hot meal on the menu and savoury items consist mainly of pies, wraps and sandwiches. As the name of the café indicates, the focus here is on marshmallow-based desserts. Every drink ordered also comes with a complimentary toasted marshmallow on a stick.

The Marshmallow Tree

The café latte ($4.50) was very decent. Those who prefer a drink without caffeine may want to try the pretty pink rose latte which I saw quite a few diners ordering.

The Marshmallow Tree

The chicken pie ($4.50) was quite ordinary but Anya enjoyed it. It makes a good snack for the kids.

The Marshmallow Tree

The domo cup ($4.80) was a yummy and decadent dessert of toasted marshmallows, cream cheese, Mars bar with a biscuit base. Some people may find it a bit too sweet but Anya and I were quite happy to eat it all up.

The Marshmallow Tree The Marshmallow Tree The Marshmallow Tree

Anya kept herself entertained by annoying giant Domokun, swinging on the swing and drawing on the chalkboard wall so I could enjoy my latte and dessert in relative peace. I am quite fond of toasted marshmallows so I wouldn’t mind dropping by again for coffee and dessert after I’ve had a proper meal somewhere else.

Last Bite: The Marshmallow Tree is great for those with a sweet-tooth but doesn’t offer much in the way of proper meals. Kids won’t be bored though!

W39 Bistro & Bakery

I’m not supposed to be writing this post because the husband LOVES W39 Bistro & Bakery and doesn’t want more people to know about it. But it’s so nice to finally have a decent cafe in the West! I adore the cheery colors in W39 and the little knickknacks all over the place. There are some old-school sweets – remember Ring Pop and Push Pop? – for sale and it’s totally a blast from the past for me.

Another super big plus for me is that W39 takes reservations by email. I’m a socially-awkward penguin and I hate speaking on the phone to strangers and having to spell my name every time I try to make a reservation.

The food at W39 is great value for money. I have never seen Eggs Benedict for $9 in any other cafe I have visited. More importantly, the food is yummy. Fussy Simon didn’t have any complaints about his food. And you know how some cafes try to have local items on the menu but completely screw it up? W39’s nasi lemak is good stuff. Even the accompanying roasted chicken leg is good! (I’m not a fan of chicken, by the way.) Anya’s pancakes from the kids’ menu was a very substantial serving and even came with a drink.
