I love the movie Shrek and was delighted to see how well it translated to the stage when the kids and I caught Shrek the Musical on Thursday night. The characters were all larger than life and we were greatly entertained by the singing and the lively dancing. I also enjoyed the development of a backstory of what happened to Shrek, Princess Fiona and Lord Farquaad during their childhood.
The attention to detail in the musical is clear to see in the scene when the fairy tale creatures get dumped in Shrek’s swamp. The fairy folk had amazing costumes! I liked how each of the three little pigs had costumes and props that differentiated them as individuals. We were also impressed by the way they brought the dragon to life through some very skillful puppetry.
While Shrek and Princess Fiona had loads of chemistry and were undoubtedly the stars of the show, Lord Farquaad really hammed it up for the audience to great comic effect. Shrek the Musical got the kids and I laughing and clapping along and is definitely entertainment for the whole family.
