Union Farm Eating House has been around since the 50s and they invented Chee Pow Kai (paper wrapped chicken). It was supposed to close for good last February when SIM asked for the return of a part of the plot of land but now it has reopened with a smaller kitchen.

We went there last Sunday for dinner and there were quite a few other tables occupied. The menu is limited but sufficient for a simple meal. The food was served quickly and without fuss.

I liked the paper wrapped chicken even though I’m usually not fond of chicken. It was tasty, juicy and tender. We ordered 20 pieces for the 9 of us and had no problem finishing the plate of chicken. They don’t serve rice there so we ordered egg noodles and bee hoon. Both were very basic but complemented the chicken and the rest of the food.

The lady who took our order recommended the prawns in special sauce and the sauce was really yummy. We also tried the fried quails (they are tiny!) and I had a good time crunching down on the head and neck of a little quail, bones and all. Surprisingly, Anya liked the quail as well.

The food is good, though not spectacular, but eating at Union Farm Eating House is such an experience in itself. I love that the place has been around for more than 60 years and is so different from your typical featureless food court and kopitiam. It’s definitely worth visiting and I’m really glad it didn’t close down.
